FMCSA proposes changes to the diabetes standard. Revisions wouldallow individuals with ITDM to operate in interstate commerce
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requestedcomments on a proposal to modify FMCSA’s minimum medicalqualifications to allow insulin-treated diabetics to operatecommercial motor vehicles. Currently, insulin-treateddiabetics are required to request an exemption from the medicalrequirements in order to drive a CMV, a process that is timeconsuming and requires additional evaluation by several medicalspecialists. FMCSA has issued over 1,000 such exemptions in thepast year and a half. Under the proposal, drivers with stable,well-controlled insulin-treated diabetes could be certified by anymedical examiner listed on the National Registry of CertifiedMedical Examiners for a maximum of one year provided their”treating clinician” provide documentation that the condition isstable and controlled.
